The No. 1-ranked St. Thomas softball team pulled a rabbit out of its hat Wednesday to close out a 3-2, eight-inning win over UW-Eau Claire. ??
With the bases loaded and none out in the home half of the eighth frame, the Tommies' Kaity Wightman caught a liner at second base and started a game-ending 4-3-5 triple play. ??
The Tommies (12-2) won their sixth in a row and avenged Sunday's 2-1 loss to the No. 13-ranked Blugolds. They also ended Eau Claire's eight-game winning streak.??
UST had brief leads of 1-0 and 2-1 in the game but Eau Claire answered. The international tie-break was used in extra innings with a runner placed on second base to open the inning. ??
The Toms scored what proved to be the winning run in the top of the eighth on Carrie Embree's two-out single. Embree also had an RBI single in the sixth inning, and walked and scored the first run in the first inning in a 2-for-3 day. Embree is batting .577 in eight tournament games with 15 hits, 13 runs and eight stolen bases. ??
Steph Moores' had an RBI sacrifice fly in the first. Maria Bye pitched all eight innings for the victory.??
UST has games Thursday vs. Doane (Neb.) and Tufts (Mass.), and finishes its Sun West trip Friday with games vs. Williams (Mass.) and Elmhurst (Ill.).??
