Men's Basketball gets 72-65 win at SMU

Freshman guard Tyler Nicolai canned a pair of key 3-point shots in a late 8-1 run and finished with 14 points as the Tommies (4-1 overall, 1-0 MIAC) held off the Cardinals (0-4, 0-1) in Wednesday night men's basketball play in Winona.
It was St. Thomas' 40th win in a row over the Cardinals covering 22 seasons.
UST shot 50% from the field and made 17-of-23 at the foul line. The Toms led 33-27 at halftime but fell behind 46-44 with 12:30 to play.
SMU trailed 57-55 with 5:30 left before Nicolai hit back-to-back threes in an 8-1 run that stretched the St. Thomas margin to nine points.
David Baker finished with 15 points while Joe Scott and Nicolai had 14 points each. Lonnie Robinson scored 10 points and Teddy Archer had nine points, four steals and three assists. UST shot 50% from the field and made 17-of-23 at the foul line.
The Toms, who have won 25 of their last 27 games vs. MIAC foes, play Saturday at UW-LaCrosse (3 p.m.) and are home Monday night to face Hamline.
