Tom Knutson scored twice and Tyler Chestnut stopped all 28 shots for his second shutout of the season as No. 10-ranked St. Thomas (6-1-1) handed No. 1-ranked UW-River Falls (5-1-3) its first loss, 5-0, in non-conference men's hockey action Tuesday night in Mendota Heights.
Ryan Hoehn chipped in a goal and an assist for the Tommies. Nate Ryan and Sean Bryant also scored goals. The Toms scored three times in a 4:11 stretch early in the second period to build a 4-0 lead.
Tyler Owens had 26 saves in goal for the Falcons, who were shutout for the first time since Jan. 2006 covering 45 games.
It was the second time in four days a Tommie sports team beat a team ranked first in the nation. Last Saturday, the UST men's basketball team edged Division II power Winona State in overtime, 83-82.
The Tommies, now 16-2-1 since mid-January 2007, are idle in conference play this weekend and compete next Tuesday at UW-Eau Claire.
