It was the conference opener for both teams and a rematch of the 2007 MIAC playoff finals, won by the Royals.
Alex Arnason and Rob Johnson each had a goal and an assist for the Tommies (4-1 overall, 1-0 MIAC). Bethel pulled within 2-1 but Alex Coles and Nate Ryan scored goals to build a 4-1 lead in the second period.
Aaron Damjanovich stopped 24 of 28 shots. Ian Vanbiesbrouck had BU's goal, assisted by Dan Bonne.
The teams play again Saturday (7 p.m.) at Saint Thomas Ice Arena in Mendota Heights.
