Senior Joe Voeller scored two goals as the St. Thomas men's soccer team secured an MIAC playoff berth and stayed in the title race with Tuesday's 5-1 victory over visiting St. Mary's in conference play in St. Paul.
In Voeller's three-year Tommie career, UST is 14-0-3 when he scores a goal.
The Tommies (11-3-3 overall, 6-0-3 MIAC) scored three goals in a 3:21 span midway through the second half to build a 4-0 lead. They can claim a home semifinal playoff game with a win Saturday over Gustavus, and win the outright MIAC championship with a Saturday win and a Carleton loss to rival St. Olaf. Gustavus topped Macalester on Tuesday and is tied with Carleton for first place, one point ahead of UST.
The Cardinals (3-12-1, 0-9) averted on a shutout on Jermaine Walker's penalty-kick goal in the 89th minute.
Thomas Gjervold had a goal and an asisst, and Max Weber and Derek Engler also scored goals. Daniel Hutton was in goal all 90 minutes and had five saves.
