Senior P.J. Theisen broke a 25-year old school receiving record and the visiting Tommies gained 610 yards and scored 27 unanswered points to close out a 50-33 MIAC football win Saturday at Augsburg.
Theisen had a go-ahead 39-yard TD catch in the third period and moved past former Minnesota Viking Jim Gustafson's 174 career receptions from 1979-82. Theisen finished the day with 11 receptions for 171 yards. He now has 12 TD catches in his last 12 games, and in 37 career games has 177 catches for 2,570 yards and 15 TDs.
Junior QB David Sauer completed 35-of-46 passes for 441 yards, three TDs and had no interceptions for the Tommies (2-4, 2-2 MIAC) in a game that featured six lead changes. Sauer also rushed for 30 yards and one TD. Jake Casey rushed 15 times for 100 yards and scored on a 6-yard run and a 24-yard reception. Sam Moen had seven grabs for 93 yards including a 60-yard TD.
UST broke to a 14-6 lead but trailed 33-23 early in the second half. The Toms scored four touchdowns to rally for their second road win in eight days. It marked just the second time in 12 seasons UST scored 50 points on the road. The Tommies' 610 yards were just 24 yards off the school single-game record.
UST allowed 430 yards of offense but intercepted three passes, recovered a fumble and had five sacks. Freshman Tony Danna had a pickoff and a sack; Jeffrey Hilliard and Taylor Thompson added interceptions; and Dan Nelson covered a fumble recovery. Pat Sommerstad led with 10 tackles. The Tommie defense had 48 yards in sack losses to help hold Augsburg to a net five yards in rushing on 23 carries.
The Tommies are home next Saturday to face Concordia-Moorhead.
