Carleton, January 03, 2007

No. 5-ranked St. Thomas got a Mike Keating steal, a lead pass and a clinching dunk by Isaac Rosefelt in the final 10 seconds and held on for an exciting 64-62 win over Carleton in Wednesday's MIAC men's basketball game in Northfield.

The Tommies (9-1 overall, 5-0 MIAC) remains in a first-place tie with St. John's, a 81-77 winner at home vs. Bethel. The Toms shot 48% from the field and had a modest 11 turnovers.

UST, which moved to 4-0 in road games this season, built a 33-27 halftime lead then held a five to 10-point margin until the wild final 2:00.

The Knights, who shot 61% in the second half, pulled within 62-60 with 58 seconds left on Jake Phillips' trey. After a UST missed shot, Carleton had the ball down two in the final 20 seconds, but Keating's steal under the Carleton basket and Rosefelt's dunk at the other end wrapped up the road victory. The Knights hit a basket at the buzzer to cut the margin to two points.

UST senior guard Bryan Schnettler had five threes and led all scorers with 21 points -- his seventh 20-point game of the season. He now has 985 points in 64 games at St. Thomas, including 228 3-point baskets.

Keating had 12 points and 11 rebounds for his sixth double double this season. Rosefelt had 10 points and three assists in 25 minutes in his first game back in four weeks. Senior Andy Dwyer had eight points, three assists and no turnovers in 31 minutes at point guard. Sophomores B.J. Viau (4-for-4 FG, eight second-half points) and Alex McCoy (three points, five rebounds) sparked the Tommies off the bench.

Zach Johnson scored 20 points, Phillips scored 19, and Tommy Drake had 11 points and six rebounds for the Knights (3-7, 2-3). Carleton has lost a pair of two-point home games to MIAC co-leaders UST and St. John's and two other games in overtime or by three or less this season.

St. Thomas plays Saturday at Bethel (1 p.m.).
