Host St. John's used a game-closing 6-0 run over the final 1:45 to score a 64-59 win over No. 3-ranked St. Thomas in a battle of MIAC men's basketball unbeatens Wednesday night in Collegeville.
Tyler Westman's 3-point basket with 1:03 to play erased a 59-58 UST lead. Brady Brink made 3-of-4 at the foul line in the final minute to seal the win. The Toms missed their last four shots in the final minute.
The Johnnies (12-3 overall, 10-0 MIAC) took a one-game lead at the halfway point of the 20-game conference race.
Isaac Rosefelt had 20 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks for the Tommies (13-2, 9-1), who had a seven-game season win streak snapped and a 13-game MIAC win streak halted dating back to last February's overtime loss at St. John's.
Mike Keating had 15 points and eight rebounds and Bryan Schnettler added 10 points for the Toms. UST outrebounded the Johnnies 34-30 but shot only 42% and was outscored 20-1 in bench points. SJU had only nine turnovers and shot 46% from the field.
St. Thomas fell behind 10-0 but stormed back to tied it 10-10. UST fell back behind by eight and trailed 30-26 at halftime. The Toms used a 16-6 run to take their first lead of the second half with 1:45 remaining on two free throws by Andrew Dwyer, but didn't score again.
St. Thomas plays Saturday at St. Mary's and Monday night at St. Olaf.
