Softball wins twice Wednesday, now 13-1

The No. 1-ranked St. Thomas softball team won two more games Wednesday in the Sun West Tournament in Orange, Calif. UST (13-1) ran their winning streak vs. Division III foes to 30.
Maria Bye and Carrie Embree combined on a five-inning perfect game as the Tommies scored an 8-0 win over Wesleyan (4-8). Bye struck out seven of the 12 batters she pitched to, and Embree fanned two of the three she faced. Nikki Conway, Missy Bruggeman and Ashley Carlblom each had two hits.
In the second game of the day, UST scored a 6-3 victory over Division II Cal State East Bay (15-6). Janet Nagle's three-run homer -- the 17th of her career -- capped a five-run fourth-inning, and the senior pitched the complete game victory. Nagle struck out six and scattered 10 hits and two walks while allowing two earned runs. Nagle and Embree each went 3-for-4 at the plate, and Mandy Evans had two hits and two RBI. Bye added an RBI double.
The Tommies close out their trip with two Thursday games -- vs. Whitworth (Wash.) and a rematch with No. 8-ranked Williams.
