Softball wins two more in California

No. 1-ranked St. Thomas scored two Monday softball wins in the Sun West Tournament in Orange, Calif., and ran its win streak vs. Division III opponents to 29 games.
The Tommies topped No. 8-ranked Williams (Mass.), 7-1, and beat Tufts (Mass.), 5-1. Coach John Tschida's Tommies improved to 11-1 on the season, including seven wins vs. nationally-ranked teams.
Janet Nagle pitched five shutout innings vs. Williams as she allowed two hits and one walk with four strikeouts. Kallie Samuleson pitched the last two innings and surrendured an unearned run in the seventh. Carrie Embree went 2-for-4 to lead a seven-hit UST attack. Maria Bye had an RBI double; Steph Moores drove in two runs with a single and a sacrifice fly; and Mandy Evans drove in two runs.
In the win over Tufts, Bye struck out 10 and allowed no earned runs, two hits and no walks. Embree led UST's nine-hit attack with two hits and scored twice; Evans homered and singled to drive in two; Nagle ripped a two-run homer in the first inning; and Fiona Lodge also had two hits.
The Toms now have hit 14 home runs in 12 games, with seven different players with at least one.
The Toms are off Tuesday, play two games Wednesday and play two Thursday to cap their trip.
