Women's Basketball falls 58-48 at UW-River Falls

Host Wisconsin-River Falls made 7-of-8 free throws in the final 49 seconds to ice a 58-48 win over St. Thomas in non-conference women's basketball play Sunday in River Falls.
Sophomores Jessica Katch (16 points) and Chelsea Wirtz (10 points) and senior Melissa Gotchnik (nine points, nine rebounds) led the offense for the Tommies (1-2).
The Falcons (3-0) used an 8-0 run over the last 7:00 of the first half to take a 24-14 halftime lead. The Toms trailed by as many as 20 with under 7:00 to go but pulled as close at 51-46 on three free throws by Wirtz with :49 to go.
UST made 21-of-25 from the foul line and outrebounded UWRF 41-31. But the Tommies shot only 25% from the field (12-of-48) and had 33 turnovers.
St. Thomas starts MIAC play with two home games this week -- Wednesday vs. St. Mary's (7:45 p.m.), and Saturday vs. St. Olaf (3 p.m.).
