Softball now 4-0 as offensive surge continues

The No. 4-ranked St. Thomas softball team won two more games Sunday in the Sun West tournament in Orange Calif. The Tommies topped Luther 10-2 in five innings and stopped Linfield (Ore.) 12-4 in five innings to move to 4-0 on the season.
The Tommies have now scored 59 runs in 22 innings. They will play two more games Monday afternoon -- vs. Luther (3 p.m. Minnesota time) and unbeaten Williams (Mass.) at 5:30.
In the Luther win, Michele Wong and Kristi Huegel each had two hits and Huegel and Molly Schmidt each drove in three runs. Schmidt had a two-run single to key a four-run first inning, and Huegel's two-run double keyed a four-run second. Stacy Tamble worked four innings and allowed two runs with no walks and three strikeouts.
In the win over Linfield, freshman Nikki Conway hit a two-run homer in the first inning, and Gina Utecht and Schmidt each had three hits. Utecht had a two-run double, Meghan Hovick and Nagel each had RBI doubles and Schmidt had an RBI single to end the game in the fifth on the eight-run rule. Andrea Sweeney worked 4 2/3 innings and struck out six while allowing one earned run, five hits and two walks.
