The St. Thomas football team lost its sixth consecutive road game Saturday as host Augsburg rallied late to post a 17-14 victory at Edor Nelson Field in Minneapolis.
Justin Kostner's three-yard first-quarter TD run -- his 20th career touchdown -- let the Tommies lead 7-0 at halftime.
St. Thomas trailed 10-7 with 9:00 to play after UST failed to execute a punt, leading to a short field for the go-ahead TD. But a nine-play, 77-yard scoring drive capped by sophomore QB Kyle Sherwin's six-yard pass to freshman P.J. Theisen put the Tommies ahead 14-10 with 5:00 to play.
Augsburg converted a 4th-and-9 situation at the Tommie 35 with just under 4:00 to play to keep possession, then scored on third-and-goal from the one-yard-line with 1:23 to play to end a seven-game losing streak to St. Thomas.
The Tommies (3-5 overall, 3-3 MIAC) finish with home games vs. No. 2-ranked St. John's on Nov. 1 and Nov. 8 at Concordia.
St. Thomas sophomore cornerback Nick Navarro had two first-half interceptions in his first career start. Sophomore DT Ben Kessler had 10 tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss including two sacks; sophomore Andrew Ubbelohde had 12 tackles. On offense, Kostner had 66 rushing yards on 23 carries and 29 reception yards on five catches; Sherwin completed 10-of-13 passes for 109 yards; sophomore Joel Korte had five catches for 49 yards; Thiesen had five catches for 44 yards.
The Toms outgained the Auggies 305-266 but had four turnovers.
