Gustavus scored a pair of first-quarter touchdowns in the rain and kept St. Thomas' offense quiet in Saturday's 21-0 MIAC football victory in St. Peter.
Drew Sifter had two TD runs and gained 132 yards on 35 carries for Gustavus (3-3 overall, 3-1 MIAC). The Gusties had the ball for 39 of the 60 minutes and picked off five passes. A short punt gave the Gusties the ball on the Tommie 16-yard-line and set up the second TD.
St. Thomas (2-4, 2-2) lost a fumble and had one pass picked off in the first half, then had four passed picked in the second half as they were shutout by the Gusties for the first time since 1980.
Justin Kostner rushed nine times for 49 yards and Walter Dosh rushed 10 times for 41 yards.
Defensively, the Tommies got second-half fumble recoveries by Matt Meunier and Ben Kessler; a sack by Dan Reisenauer; and 14 tackles by Andrew Ubbelohde.
St. Thomas is home against 0-5 Carleton next Saturday in a 1 p.m. kickoff at O'Shaughnessy Stadium.
