Jake Barkley rushed for three touchdowns and posted his 18th career 100-yard game as the St. Thomas football team moved to 2-0 in the MIAC with Saturday's 41-7 conference victory at Hamline.
Last season, the Toms scored a 35-6 win at Hamline.
Saturday, UST senior defensive end Sean O'Leary had 2.5 sacks and became the Tommies' career leader. He passed Joe Langel (22.5) and now has 24.5.
O'Leary led a defense that didn't allow a point and held the Pipers to just over 200 yards of offense. Tore Evenson had an interception and a half sack, and Joe Skaja recovered a fumble to halt a scoring bid by the Pipers (0-3 overall, 0-2 MIAC).
The Tommies (2-1 overall, 2-0 MIAC) broke to a 27-0 lead early in the second quarter. Hamline's lone TD came on a 75-yard punt return that cut the lead to 28-7.
Barkley rushed 30 times for 114 yards, including touchdown runs of 2, 27 and 11 yards. Barkley, who now has 10 season TDs and 31 career TDs, now has 3,649 yards and needs 76 to pass Gary Trettel and become the Toms' career rushing leader. He needs 285 yards to become the all-time MIAC leader.
Senior WR Justin Hall caught five passes for 127 yards, including TDs of 25 and 35 yards. Senior QB Nick Ambrasas completed 15-of-22 passes for 280 yards with two interceptions.
The Toms, who didn't have a turnover in their first two games, fumbled Saturday's opening kickoff. But the UST defense stopped the Pipers and forced a 37-yard field-goal try, which missed.
The Tommies, who had more than 400 yards of offense, remain tied atop the MIAC at 2-0 with Concordia, a 35-14 winner at Bethel, and St. Olaf, a 23-21 winner over Augsburg. St. John's, 1-0 in the MIAC, won at home over UW-Whitewater Saturday.
The Tommies play unbeaten Wisconsin-Stout next Saturday in O'Shaughnessy Stadium in a non-conference game. Stout scored an impressive 39-14 win at home Saturday night over previously-unbeaten UW-Eau Claire.
