Senior RB Jake Barkley broke a St. Thomas single-game record with five touchdowns and the host Tommies (1-1 overall, 1-0 MIAC) broke to a 28-0 first-half lead en route to a 49-25 win over Bethel (0-2, 0-1) in MIAC football action Saturday at O'Shaughnessy Stadium.
Barkley had TD runs of 56, 14 and 5 yards in the first half as the Tommies built a 35-6 halftime lead. He added scores of 32 and 2 yards in the third period and finished with 243 yards on 30 rushes in playing just the first three quarters.
Six Tommie players had previously scored four touchdowns in one game.
The Toms ended a three-game losing skid to Bethel and avenged a 55-31 loss to the Royals on the same field 10 months ago. In that game, the NCAA-playoff bound Royals held Barkley to 69 yards on 23 carries. The Tommie seniors were 0-6 on their career vs. Bethel and St. John's coming in to Saturday's game.
The Tommies have now played eight quarters this season without a turnover.
Barkley now has 3,535 career yards in 30 games, fourth most in MIAC history. He needs 190 yards to pass St. Thomas all-time leader Gary Trettel, and 556 yards to pass MIAC career leader Ole Gunderson of St. Olaf (4,090 from 1969-71).
Barkley has seven TDs this season and 28 on his career. It was his third career 200-yard game and 17th time in his 30 career games he's broken 100 yards.
Tommie senior DE Sean O'Leary had three sacks among his eight tackles and now has 22 sacks on his career -- one away from passing career leader Joe Langel. Sophomore DB Steve Groth -- playing football for the first time since 1996 -- had an interception, two break-ups and six tackles.
Bethel QB Scott Kirchoff became the Royals' career passing yards leader in the loss. He now has 6,128 passing yards after completing 18-of-34 for 244 yards and two touchdowns. Bethel All-American RB Mike Johnson rushed 23 times for 94 yards, including a 2-yard TD run.
St. Thomas senior Andrew Hilliard surpassed 2,000 career receiving yards as he caught five passes for 83 yards, including a 12-yard TD in the first quarter. Hilliard now has 108 catches for 2,024 yards. UST senior WR Justin Hall had four catches for 80 yards including a 17-yard TD with 55 seconds left in the first half that built a 35-6 lead.
Tommie senior QB Nick Ambrasas completed 11-of-18 passes for 178 yards and two TDs with no interceptions. The Tommies outgained the Royals 519-362 yards.
The Tommies play at Hamline next Saturday, while Bethel is home to face Concordia-Moorhead.
