Softball starts 1-1 in Sun West tourney

The St. Thomas softball team split two games Monday in day one of the Sun West tournament in Orange, Calif. The 19th-ranked Tommies lost 5-0 to No. 16-ranked Tufts (Mass.) and topped Williams (Mass.) 11-1 in five innings.
UST (4-2) plays two Tuesday morning games -- vs. Seattle U. and Plattsburgh (N.Y.) State.
Tufts (4-0), an NCAA College World Series qualifier in 2000, handed Tommie soph pitcher Stacy Tamble her first loss. Tamble allowed seven hits and four walks and four earned runs over six innings. UST senior Sarah Grudnowski made her season debut and was 2-for-3 with a walk to lead a five-hit attack.
UST senior Casey Curson earned the pitching win in game two as she allowed five hits and one walk and no earned runs in four innings. Curson, who doubled vs. Tufts, was 2-for-2 at the plate; Shannon Moore was 2-for-3 with two doubles; Grudnowski was 3-for-3; Avery Heidenreich had three RBI; and freshman catcher Megan Hovick was 2-for-3.
