Toms open season with victory
St. Thomas scored a 5-0 victory over St. Olaf in MIAC women's hockey play Friday night in Northfield. It was the season opener for the Tommies who return 10 players from a 10-11-1 team of 1999-2000. Freshman Nicki Magill had two goals and two assists to lead the shutout win. UST outshot the Oles 35-7. Danielle Mikolai had seven saves in goal for the shutout win.
The Toms then edged St. Olaf 3-2 Saturday at the Parade Ice Garden to complete a weekend sweep.
Saturday, the Toms outshot the Oles 39-5 but couldn't pull away. Tomery Stolz had the game's first goal. The game was tied 1-1 after two periods, but the Toms scored a pair of goals early in the third period. Freshman Jessica Christopherson scored an unassisted goal and Alison Holland scored a short-handed goal. Jordan Benson had three saves in goal.
The Toms play two non-conference games this week -- Wednesday at UW-Eau Claire and Friday vs. Sacred Heart in the Fairgrounds Coliseum (7 p.m.).
