Mario Retica graduated from the University of St. Thomas with a BA in 1937. He was a four-year member of the basketball and football teams, and was a football co-captain and All-MIAC honoree in 1936. He became a high school football coach for Hibbing High School after graduating, and was named the 1953 Minnesota High School Coach of the Year.
