Joy Tietz is entering her fourth season as assistant coach of St. Thomas volleyball in 2024 after previously coaching for 10 seasons with the Tommies from 2006-15.
Tietz has been on the front line throughout St. Thomas’ transition to NCAA Division I, helping the program improve in wins over each of its first three seasons mainly behind a starting cast of underclassmen. St. Thomas has totaled three selections to the Summit League All-Freshman Team in Lauren Galvin, Emma Goerger and Tezra Rudizitis and six selections to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team during Tietz's time on the sidelines.
Before returning to St. Thomas, Tietz served as the assistant coach of Concordia-St. Paul volleyball, spending two years in the role at her alma mater. Prior to Concordia-St. Paul, Tietz spent two seasons from 2016-17 as a volunteer assistant with the University of Minnesota, helping the team to back-to-back trips to the NCAA Tournament.
Tietz was hired by MN Select Volleyball in September of 2015 as its Associate Director. Her responsibilities included coaching club teams, event schedule creation, assuring all travel logistics, coach support, and directing and coordinating all positional and camp training sessions. Prior to joining MN Select Volleyball, Tietz spent 10 seasons as the assistant coach of St. Thomas volleyball, from 2006-15. During her time, St. Thomas won seven MIAC conference championships, made three consecutive trips to the Elite Eight and won one NCAA Division III National Championship in 2012.
During her volleyball career at Concordia-St. Paul, Tietz was a three-year captain, a two-time All-American, and the 2004 NSIC Player of the Year. She helped the team reach their first ever NCAA Division II National Championship game in the 2003 season. Tietz remains the all-time leader in total blocks (540), ranks second in block solos (119) and points (2,073.5) and fifth in kills (1,603) at CSP. She graduated with honors and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Education and Parent Education.
Tietz and her husband have one daughter, Jade, who all reside in Eden Prairie, Minn.
