Longtime throws assistant Pat Ahern had a remarkable career himself as a St. Thomas student-athlete and has been a behind-the-scenes gem in working with Tommie throwers over the last two decades. He has coached four NCAA champion throwers here in the last 12 seasons.

Athletic Achievements/Important Information:
- 4-time national champion – 2 discus, 1 weight throw, 1 hammer
- 3-time national runner -up -- 1 discus, 1 weight throw, 1 shot put
- Still holds school records in three events 25 years later (discus (193-4; hammer, 202-11; weight throw, 61-10 3-4… discus mark still ranks No. 7 in D-III history… all three marks were in top five all time D-III when recorded 25 years ago)
- Total 9-time All-American
- 4-time All-American in discus – one of select few to place at nationals in same event four times
- National record holder in weight throw
- 1992 Olympic Trials participant
- 1993 U.S. National Championships qualifier
- Florida Relays and Kansas Relays champion, invite division
- Penn Relays Olympic development, place finisher
- Conference meet record holder, Outstanding Performer, Outstanding Performance
- 8-time conference champion (shot put, discus, hammer, weight throw)
- Still holds school records in three events 25 years later (discus, hammer, weight throw)
- Team captain – Team won 8 or possible 8 conference championships when he competed
