ST. PAUL, Minn. — The University of St. Thomas has spent the past several years writing one of the most distinctive chapters in college athletics — becoming the first school in modern NCAA history to move directly from Division III to Division I and earning full membership prior to the 2025-26 season.
The Tommies now have a new partner to tell the stories of their department. St. Thomas Athletics has signed a multi-year agreement with FanWord, the leading storytelling and technology company in college sports, and will use the company's signature software, FanWord Assist, starting in 2026-27.
With 21 varsity programs competing in the Summit League, the Pioneer Football League, the NCHC and the WCHA, St. Thomas has no shortage of teams, student-athletes and milestones to cover. FanWord Assist gives the Tommies' communications staff the tools they need to keep pace with everything happening across the department.
"This is an exciting time for athletic communications, and we're thrilled to partner with FanWord as St. Thomas continues to embrace the evolving landscape of new media," said Assistant Athletic Director of Athletic Communications Kelsey Whaley. "This partnership positions Tommie Athletics at the forefront of emerging technology, allowing us to streamline our workflows while continuing to create engaging, impactful content for our student-athletes, fans and the broader Tommie community."
FanWord Assist supports athletic communications teams in two lanes. On game days, it turns stats, notes and interviews into publish-ready recaps within minutes, getting results in front of fans while the moment is still fresh. Between competitions, it helps staff produce feature stories, player bios, athlete spotlights and other written content.
"We're thrilled to welcome St. Thomas to a growing network of future-forward institutions," said Chris Aumueller, CEO of FanWord. "In this day and age, there are so many important stories to tell, and we can't wait to help the Tommies bring more of those stories to life."
The Tommies join a rapidly-growing FanWord network of more than 215 athletic departments and conferences nationwide. That includes Division 1 schools like Colorado State, Tulsa, Florida State, and UConn, as well as Minnesota-based Division 2 institutions like Minnesota State, Minnesota Duluth, and Bemidji State. Over the next few years, FanWord Assist will support storytelling for every athletics program at St. Thomas, helping the department deepen its connection with fans, alumni and donors.
