Bauer Berry scored a shorthanded goal in the 3-1 defeat
BEMIDJI, Minn. – St. Thomas men's hockey (18-11-4, 15-7-3) dropped game one of the final weekend series against Bemidji State (13-17-3, 11-11-3) 3-1 at the Sanford Center on Friday night. Bauer Berry scored a shorthanded goal in the second period, the Tommies' nation-leading 11th of the season.
The Purple managed a flurry of chances in the opening minutes but could not push anything past Bemidji State netminder, Max Hildebrand, who ended the game with 32 saves. The adversity thickened at 13:58 when, 21 seconds into the Toms' first power play, the Beavers scored a shorthanded goal. It was the first shorthanded goal allowed by the Tommies since October 17 against Air Force.
Bemidji doubled its lead at 7:14 in the second period but the Tommies reeled the home team back in at 13:51 while on the penalty. The nation's leader in shorthanded goals had gone without one since January 17 (against Bemidji State). Bauer Berry changed that on a goal from the high slot from Dylan Godbout and Chase Cheslock.
Despite being outshot 17-7 in the final frame, the Beavers lengthened their lead at 10:57. The Tommies won the overall shots battle 33-21 and won 36 faceoffs to Bemidji's 23.
