Tommies sweep first-place Mavericks for second road win

Schmidt hit 10+ kills for 12th straight match and adds 4 blocks in 25-20, 25-18, 25-18 road victory

OMAHA, Neb. —St. Thomas volleyball took down first-place Omaha in a sweep (25-20, 25-18, 25-18) Friday night at Baxter Arena to secure its second road win of the season. Sophomore Anya Schmidt led the offense with 10 kills, along with 9 digs and 4 blocks on the defensive end, as the Tommies improve to 4-10 overall and 2-3 in Summit League play.
 
TOP TOMMIES
Anya Schmidt
- Hit a season-high .421, her second match of the season hitting above .400.
- Schmidt registered a career-high three solo blocks and finished with a team-high four total blocks.
- Schmidt extended her streak of at least 10 kills to 12 consecutive matches.
- Second on the team with nine digs.
 
Addie Schmotzer
- Reached 200 career total blocks.
- Surpassed 500 career points, totaling 502 with five points in the win.
 
Morgan Kealy
- Directed the offense with 24 assists and added 12 digs on the defensive end, her seventh straight double-double and 10th of the season.
 
Ellie Gustafson
- Totaled three total blocks, including two solo.
- Added 5 digs and 4 kills to finish with 7.5 points.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
St. Thomas volleyball turned a 5-4 deficit into a 9-6 lead in the first set, with Schmidt involved in back-to-back blocks and Reilly Kurth adding a kill from Morgan Kealy during the response. Tommie Volleyball kept Omaha from pulling even again, later reaching 22-17 on a Bryn Lunski service ace. Ellie Gustafson closed the set with a service ace for a 25-20 St. Thomas win.
 
A five-point run broke an 11-11 tie in the second set, including back-to-back Lunski service aces and Schmotzer kill from Kealy. St. Thomas volleyball kept Omaha from getting closer than four points the rest of the set, with Schmidt adding three late kills. Tommie Volleyball closed the set on an Omaha attack error blocked by Schmotzer and Gustafson to win 25-18.
 
St. Thomas volleyball turned a 15-15 tie into control of the third set by winning seven of the next eight rallies, moving ahead 22-16. Kira Brundage served through four straight points in that stretch, including a service ace, and Gustafson added a kill from Kealy. Tommie Volleyball finished the set 25-18.
 
UP NEXT
St. Thomas volleyball travels to Kansas City, Mo., to face Kansas City on Thursday, Oct. 15 before closing its three-match road trip Saturday, Oct. 17 at Oral Roberts in Tulsa, Okla.
