Knowles lifts Tommies to first Summit League win of 2026

FARGO, N.D. — The University of St. Thomas earned its first Summit League victory Thursday eveing in Fargo, North Dakota. St. Thomas defeated North Dakota State 2-1 on Thursday. The Tommies scored both goals in the first half and held the Bison scoreless after halftime while finishing even in shots at 11 apiece.

First half
- Sophia Alvarez made early saves in the fourth and 18th minutes before St. Thomas broke through at 19:48, when Izzy McEwan scored off an assist from Kalli Knowles for a 1-0 lead.
- North Dakota State pushed back with two shots and a corner kick before Hannah Arnold scored at 29:57 from a Gabrielle Garrett assist to tie the match 1-1.
- St. Thomas responded at 31:37 on an unassisted goal by Knowles, then held through two North Dakota State shots and two corner kicks to take a 2-1 lead into halftime.

Second half
- St. Thomas created early second-half looks, with Melina Knowles taking a shot at 51:58 before a corner kick and later putting an attempt on goal at 61:48 that Payton Mulberry saved.
- North Dakota State had a stretch from 67:48 to 72:05 that included a corner kick, three shots and an offside call, but the half remained scoreless.
- St. Thomas generated a late push with a corner at 77:54, back-to-back shots on goal from Molly Armstrong and Emily McCarthy at 78:05, and a Kayden Scrima attempt at 83:50.
- Alvarez saved Ava Stanchina's shot at 81:05, and after North Dakota State was issued team yellow and red cards at 87:19, St. Thomas finished off the 2-1 win.

Kalli Knowles scored the game-winning goal and added an assist, finishing with three points on her only shot. It was Knowles' first game-winning goal of the season. McEwan scored on one of her two shots and put one attempt on goal. Alvarez played all 90 minutes in goal, recorded three saves and allowed one goal. Melina Knowles led St. Thomas with three shots, including one on goal.

St. Thomas is 2-8-1 overall and 1-3-0 in conference play. North Dakota State is 3-5-5 overall and 1-2-1 in conference play.

Up next, the St. Thomas soccer team travels to Grand Forks, N.D., to face University of North Dakota on Sunday, Oct. 11, at 1 p.m.
