Tommies set for nationally competitive field at Joe Piane Invitational

Cross Country’s men and women ready for third meet of 2026 in Notre Dame, Ind.
ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Thomas men's and women's cross country teams return to the nationally competitive Joe Piane Invitational for the fourth time with five races on Friday, Oct. 2 hosted by Notre Dame in Notre Dame, Ind.
The first race of the day, the Women's Blue Division 5,000-meter hosted at Burk Golf Course, begins at 9 a.m. CT followed by the Men's Blue Division 8K at 9:40 a.m. CT. The Women's Open Division 5K and Men's Open Division 8K start at 10:20 a.m. CT while the Women's Gold Division 5K is at 11 a.m. CT and the Men's Gold Division 8K at 11:40 a.m.

THE LAST TIME OUT
The St. Thomas women continued their strong start at the Roy Griak Invitational, with two Tommies breaking the program's 6K record as the team placed four runners among the top 36. Olivia Pauly led the way in 28th at 20:58.8, breaking her own program record, while freshman Anna VanAcker followed in 29th at 21:00.2 to also surpass the previous mark. Olivia Goebel placed 31st in 21:04.7 and Lindsay Berg was 36th in 21:10.3, while Sophie Yetter added a 38th-place finish in 21:11.9.
The Tommie men placed sixth among 18 teams, led by Casey Poppler in 20th at 24:22.8. Max Westerlund finished 33rd in 24:46.8, followed closely by Ben Stricker in 35th (24:50.9), Nate Meyer in 36th (24:51.0) and Isaac Nowak in 37th (24:51.6). Head coach Pete Wareham cited the team's progress and performances from Stricker, Meyer, Nowak and freshman Eli Horeled as positives as St. Thomas continues to build toward the championship portion of its schedule.
UP NEXT
The Tommie women are back in action the following week on Saturday, Oct. 10 with a trip to Decorah, Iowa to compete at the Legends Invite, hosted by Luther College. Both the men and women will then travel to Peoria, Ill., on Friday, Oct. 16 to run at the Bradley Pink Classic.
