Schmidt paces St. Thomas with 14 kills in 24-26, 25-27, 20-25 loss to South Dakota

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Two extra-point sets set the tone of a tightly contested three-set match Thursday night as St. Thomas fell to South Dakota (24-26, 25-27, 20-25) in Schoenecker Arena. Senior Morgan Kealy and sophomore Anya Schmidt again recorded double-doubles as the Tommies fall to 3-9 overall and 1-2 in Summit League play.
 
TOP TOMMIES
Anya Schmidt
- Recorded 14 kills to lead the Tommies, surpassing 500 in her career.
- Hit .290 and added one service ace and one block assist to finish with 15.5 points.
- Totaled 12 digs for her fourth straight double-double and fifth on the season.
 
Morgan Kealy
- Finished with 30 assists and 11 digs for her fifth straight double-double and eighth of the season.
- Has 998 career digs and will become the second Tommie of the Division I era to reach 1,000 career digs.
 
Addie Schmotzer
- Registered a team high six blocks, including three solo.
- Totaled 12.5 points with eight kills on a .269 attack percentage.
 
Taylor McNear
- Recorded 20 or more digs in back-to-back matches.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
St. Thomas erased USD's 24-21 set-point lead with two Schmidt kills and a Schmotzer block that tied the set at 24. Earlier, St. Thomas responded to a 6-1 start by the Coyotes and later pulled even at 16 on another Schmotzer block. USD took the next two points after the 24-24 tie to finish the set, 26-24.
 
In the second set, St. Thomas put itself in position by moving ahead 18-11, with a Morgan Kealy/Schmotzer block and a Schmidt service ace adding back-to-back points. USD later came back to lead 22-21, but Emory Brosnahan and Schmidt delivered late kills as St. Thomas tied the set at 25-25. The Coyotes scored the final two points to take the set 27-25.
 
In the third set, St. Thomas erased an early 6-3 deficit and moved in front 8-7, with Kealy and Schmidt contributing kills during that stretch. USD later built a 24-17 lead before St. Thomas answered with three straight points, including kills by Ellie Gustafson and Schmidt, but the Coyotes closed the set 25-20.
