The Tommies battled for the tournament’s best team score with a -6 in the second 18 of 36 holes played on day one of the Jackrabbit Invite.
BOULDER CITY, Nev. – The University of St. Thomas Men's Golf team turned around a rough first round with the tournament's best team 18 as they shot a -6 during the second round. Three of the Toms' golfers finished the second round below par: Will Frazier (-4), Owen Rexing (-3), and Matthew Armstrong (-1).
Owen Rexing was the most consistent Tommie and landed himself in fourth place out of the 84-golfer field. The sophomore completed his 36 holes while going -1, just two strokes out of a three-way tie for first place. He shot a +2 during the first 18 with four birdies, two on the front and two on the back. Rexing shined during the latter half of the day with a -3 on four more birdies and just one hole over par.
The next Tommie in the top-10 after two rounds of play was Will Frazier. The Apple Valley, Minn. native recovered in round two after a +5 performance in the first. His team-best -4 in round two propelled him into a tie for seventh place at +1. Frazier eagled two of his final four holes and added three more birdies during the round.
Matthew Armstrong's -1 in round two helped him finish the day in a tie for 19th place at +4. He birdied four holes, including two in his last five.
Matthew Garside finished the day tied for 50th place with a +11. Gavin Newkirk shot a +12 and finished tied for 54th place, and Zach Rouleau shot a +13 while competing as an independent tied for 59th place.
Quoting Coach Rachey
"It was great to get the spring competitive season under way. Honestly, the start of the day was disappointing. The guys started slow and battled some adversity early with sloppy play. The afternoon was a more complete round, and it was great to shoot the low team round at six under. I am very encouraged with the momentum we finished the day with and the fight our guys had down the stretch. We will start better tomorrow."
