Women’s Soccer concludes 2024 season with setback at NDSU

10/27/2024 4:19:00 PM | Women's Soccer

The Tommies had an early lead, but the Bison struck for two goals

FARGO, N.D. – University of St. Thomas Women's Soccer (5-9-3 overall, 1-5-2 Summit League) could not hold on to its early lead during the final game of the 2024 season, falling to the Summit League Regular Season Champion North Dakota State Bison (10-5-3 overall, 6-1-1 Summit League) by a score of 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Dakotah Field.

Tatum Trettel scored the Tommies' goal from CJ Fredkove. Olivia Rowe made the start in goal and saved three of the five shots she faced; one of her two goals allowed was a penalty kick.

Recap
St. Thomas was tasked with playing spoiler on Sunday. A win or a tie would have taken NDSU out of first place in the Summit League with Denver's 2-0 win over South Dakota. The Tommies got out to a good start in their quest to topple the conference's best team when Tatum Trettel scored her third goal of the season off a perfect pass on a free kick from CJ Fredkove in the 28th minute.

The Tommies did a great job of containing the North Dakota State offense, allowing just two shots on goal through the entire first half and none after taking the lead.

Morgan Russmann, the conference's leading scorer, would be the difference for the Bison in the second half. She added her 10th of the season in the 61st minute and then her 11th in the 66th minute after a Tommie foul in the 18-yard box forced a penalty kick chance. Russmann got the ball through the left side of Rowe who guessed correctly but could not get a hand on the attempt.

St. Thomas would not get another shot on goal as the Bison locked it down defensively and celebrated their conference championship in front of their home crowd.

The Bison outshot the Toms 5-4 but the Tommies had more chances (11-10).
