Piane Invitational, Blugold Invite on deck for Tommie Cross Country

Men and women travel to South Bend, Ind., while women also head to Colfax, Wis.

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- St. Thomas men's and women's cross country continue the 2024 with two meets on deck for Friday, Oct. 4. The Tommie men and women will both compete at the Joe Piane Invitational hosted by the University Notre Dame while the women will also send student-athletes to the Blugold Invite hosted by the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire.
 
The Tommie women will run first at the Joe Piane Invitational, held at the Burke Golf Course in South Bend, Ind., as the Open Division starts at 12 p.m. followed by the Gold Division at 1:30 p.m. The men's first race is the Open Division at 12:45 p.m. followed by the Gold Division at 2:15 p.m. Both women's races are 5,000 meters while the men's are 8,000 meters.
 
At the Blugold Invite, hosted at the Whitetail Golf Course in Colfax, Wis., the women will run the 6,000m race at 4:15 p.m.

Last Time Out
Men
The Tommies ran their first 8,000m race of the season Sept. 20 at the Roy Griak Invitational where the team finished 14th of 17 teams. Max Westerlund set a personal record and led the Tommies with a time of 25:57.0 to finish 47th overall followed by Sean McNiesh in 62nd with a time of 26:12.8. Tony Weeks also finished among the top 100 in 85th with a time of 26:37.2 while freshman Kai Liljequist placed 109th in 26:53.5, his first 8K race as a Tommie. Charlie Power-Theisen rounded out the top five point scorers in 122nd with a time of 27:03.1.
 
Women
Also at the Roy Griak Invitational, the women placed 15th of 17 teams in the 6,000m race. Ava Pankratz placed 59th in 23:00.4 to top the Tommie women, followed by Molly Desotell in 73rd with a time of 23:13.0. Freshman Sophie Yetter finished 86th in 23:28.0 while Annie Kiolbasa took 102nd in 23:42.2. Elsie Kmecak finished 133rd with a time of 24:11.6.
 
2023 Joe Piane Review
At the Piane Invitational, the women featured student-athletes in both the Open 5K and the Gold 5K, taking eighth of 19 programs in the gold race. Senior Molly Desotell paced all Tommies with an eighth-place finish in the gold race with a personal record time of 17:31.0, topping her previous best by almost 30 seconds. All five of the Tommies' top finishers set 5K personal records.
 
A trio of student-athletes led the men's program in the Gold 5-Mile race at the Joe Piane Invitational, helping the team to a fifth-place finish among 16 teams. Junior Caden Nordberg led the Purple with a 10th place time of 24:38.8, followed by Colton Halla in 12th with a time of 24:41.4 and Charlie Caven in 16th with a time of 24:43.1.
 
Up Next
The Tommie men and women return to the course Friday, Oct. 18 at the Pink Classic hosted by Bradley University in Peoria, Ill. It will be the final regular season race for the men while the women will also run Friday, Oct. 25 at Rocky's Run hosted by the University of Minnesota.
