Gustafson leads with 13 kills, Galvin records seventh double-double of 2024
ST. PAUL, Minn. -- St. Thomas volleyball came out firing Saturday against undefeated (RV) South Dakota State but fell in four sets (25-16, 25-20, 25-20, 25-18) at Schoenecker Arena. Ellie Gustafson led with 13 kills and Lauren Galvin notched her seventh double-double of the season as the Tommies fall to 12-8 overall and 4-4 in the Summit League and the Jackrabbits improve to 18-0 overall and 7-0 in league play.
Gustafson led the Purple in kills for the fifth time this season while Galvin followed with 11 kills and 11 digs. Tezra Rudzitis finished with 11 kills and two block assists while Morgan Kealy was one dig shy of a double-double with 37 assists and nine digs.
A pair of SDSU attack errors allowed St. Thomas to take the lone lead of the set, despite the Jackrabbits tying the set twice at 2-2 and 4-4. Addie Schmotzer's first of eight kills in the match was part of a quick 5-1 run that gave the Tommies momentum. The lead was extended to a set high nine, 16-7, before the Tommies secured the set with four straight points, 25-16.
Both teams stayed within two points to start set two until SDSU went on a quick 3-0 run to lead, 12-9. The Jackrabbits held the lead the rest of the way despite six kills from Gustafson in the set. SDSU picked up steam the rest of the match as it improved its hitting percentage in each of the third and fourth sets.
St. Thomas and South Dakota State again stayed within reach of each other in the third set until a 4-0 run by SDSU. Kills from Schmotzer, Galvin and Rudzitis helped tie the set, 20-20, before the Jacks went on a 5-0 run to win the game. South Dakota State began the final set on a 5-0 run for the final lead of the match. Galvin, Gustafson and Rudzitis each totaled three kills in the set to bring the Tommies back within three, but the Jackrabbits scored four of the final six points to secure the match win.
