Tommies to begin Summit League play on Saturday

St. Paul, Minn. --  St. Thomas Men's Soccer (1-3-1) opens Summit League play at home against No. 19-ranked  Denver on Sep. 23.

The Tommie and Denver match-up is the third time these two teams have met. Last season, the Tommies earned a 0-0 tie with at the time No. 10-ranked Denver. In that game, Tucker Mann collected 12 saves in goal and host Tommie Men's Soccer went toe-to-toe all 90 minutes with Summit League power Denver

Happy to be Home
The Tommies earned their first win of the season with a 2-1 victory over the Chicago State Cougars on Saturday at South Field. The home opener had a quiet start, which led to two straight second half goals to take down the Cougars.
 
First Win of 2023
It was a quiet start to the Saturday afternoon game, with the first half ending scoreless for both teams. The Tommies attempted five shots in the first half, while the Cougars shot six towards the goal. Tommie goalkeeper, Tucker Mann, saved all three shots in the first half, shutting down all opportunities from the Cougars.
 
Second half action began quickly, as the Cougars scored a goal to go up 1-0 in the 49th minute. The Tommies responded quickly when under two minutes later, Faris Colic forced a turnover just outside the 18-yard box, took a touch and scored his second goal of the season to help the Tommies tie the game.
 
Both teams continued to battle, and in the final three minutes of play, sophomore Oliver Bieleveldt scored his second goal of the season off a corner kick. Bieleveldt's game winning goal helped the Tommies to their first win of the season in their home opener.
 
Junior Jump
The St. Thomas juniors; Faris Colic, Charlie Holton, Keegan James, and Steevie Lamarre, are experienced Tommies that have been relied upon to drive the of fense and play lockdown defense.  
 
Faris Colic and Charlie Holton both scored their first goal of the season for the Tommies in the 2-2 draw against UNF on Monday, Sep. 4. Keegan James posted an assist on the game-tying goal by Colic. 
 
Colic scored his second goal of the season against Chicago State, to help the Tommies earn their first win of the season.
 
Steevie Lamarre has started in four games, recording 175 minutes at forward.
 
Fresh Faces
First-years Moritz Krenc, Tommy Kniser, and Jacob Thao have made an impact on the Tommies this season.

Krenc, a freshman goalkeeper from Dusseldorf, Germany, made his debut playing against Northwestern where he made three saves. Against UIC, Krenc again competed the entire match, making eight saves and posting a .727 save percentage.
 
Kniser, a freshman midfielder from St. Louis Park, Minn., has recorded 318 minutes for the Tommies and has made three starts on the season.
 
Thao, a freshman midfield from St. Paul, has competed in 226 minutes and recorded one shot in the first five games.
 
The Mann
Senior goalkeeper, Tucker Mann, has played three games in net for the Tommies, posting a 1-0-1 record during the 2023 season. Mann has played 201 minutes and posted a 1.34 GAA so far on the season.
 
Mann has competed in 24 games for the Tommie on his career, making a start in 22. He has made 113 saves and recorded a .748 SV% in four seasons with the Tommies.

Scouting the Pioneers
The Denver Men's Soccer team is led by head coach Jamie Franks in his ninth season. In eight seasons, head coach Jamie Franks of the 2016 National Coaching Staff of the Year has put together a record of 97-33-23.
[19] Denver (4-1-3) is coming off a 2-2 draw on the road with Seattle. Denver faced their first loss of the season on the road to Portland on Friday, Sep. 15.
 
Junior forward, Oje Ofunrein, leads the nation in goals and is tied for first in points so far this season. Ofunrein has scored eight goals and tallied one assist for 17 points. Goalkeeper, Isaac Nehme, has played eight full games for the Pioneers, making 20 saves and posting a .690 SV%.
