St. Thomas drops finale 8-1 in series sweep to No. 24 Oral Roberts

5/7/2023 4:12:00 PM | Baseball

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Sam Kulesa and Max Moris contributed multi-hit games Sunday as the St. Thomas baseball team fell 8-1 to No. 24 Oral Roberts at Koch Diamond.

Kulesa and Moris each went 2-of-4 from the plate, while Kulesa scored the Tommies' lone run and Moris recorded the team's only extra-base hit.

Joe Vos came up with the game's first hit during the bottom of the second inning before the Golden Eagles took advantage of a walk and a hit by pitch in the top of the third. With runners on second and third base after a sacrifice bunt, ORU's first hit drove in both runs for its final lead of the day.

The Golden Eagles tacked on another five runs during the top of the fifth inning while the Tommies scored its only run in the bottom of the seventh. Kulesa led off the home half with a single to right center field, and despite a double play two batters later, was brought in on an RBI single up the middle by Dylan O'Connell.

Evan Esch (2-3) started on the mound and finished 4.0 innings with five hits, five walks and five earned runs allowed. Tucker Huhn and Bryce Leedle combined to finish the game, including two strikeouts from Leedle.

The Tommies totaled 10 baserunners, including at least one in each of the first seven innings, and left eight on base.

St. Thomas makes its final road trip of the Summit League schedule Tuesday, May 9 with a doubleheader at Western Illinois in Macomb, Ill. The mid-week games are part of rescheduled contests from the March 24-26 series that was postponed. Tommie Baseball will also host the Leathernecks in St. Paul for a four-game series May 12-14, with the first game being considered a home contest for WIU.
