Women's 4x100 has good showing in Texas

San Marco, Texas -- The St. Thomas Track and Field men's and women's sprinters had a good day Saturday at the Texas State University Invite.

The St. Thomas men's 4x100 relay team of Gary Afram, Isaiah Hopf, Mitchell Piehl and Eric Douville ran the second fastest time in program history. The quartet clocked 40.81 to place sixth out of 21 teams. That's the fastest time since the 2009 Toms clocked 40.75 in winning a Division III national title.

The Tommie women's 4x100 relay took seventh out of 17 teams in 47.77 -- a Division I era best clocking. Hannah Cornelius, Alexis Pratt, Taynian Walgrave and Maddy Dolby comprised the relay.

Jack Rosner took 25th out of 49 athletes in the 110 hurdles in a career-best clocking of 14.72.

Redshirt freshman Brett Ringer took 13th out of 37 athletes in the 400 meters with a time of 47.94. That was his collegiate best clocking and the No. 5 time in program history.

Eric Douville (10.77) and Gary Afram (10.78) placed 21st and 23rd in the 100 meters.

Taynian Walgrave took 22nd out of 47 in the 100 hurdles in 14.38, just .13 off her career best. 

Alicia Belany took fourth place out of 26 runners in her section of the 800 in 2:18.71.

Alexis Pratt clocked 12.23 in the 100 meters -- a best time in that event for the Tommie women's D-I era.


Texas Relays

St. Thomas sprinters also had some good early-season times at the Texas Relays in Austin, Texas.  

The women's 4x100 relay clocked 47.52 -- the third best time thus far in the Summit League. The foursome was Hannah Cornelius, Alexis Pratt, Taynian Walgrave and Maddy Dolby. In the 100 meters, Pratt clocked 12.08 and Cornelius was timed in 12.47.

On the men's side, Gary Afram clocked 10.65, Brett Ringer ran 10.97 and Mitchell Piehl clocked 11.02. Sam Duffing clocked 15.12 in the 110 hurdles.


Next Up

St. Thomas is scheduled to host  the Tomcat Invite on Friday April 7.


Friday Story

Sophomore multi-event competitor Jack Rosner has recorded three solid performances so far for Tommie Men's Track and Field at the Texas State University Invite.

St. Thomas has a partial squad of men and women at this weekend's competition to start its 2023 outdoor season. The competition concludes on Saturday.

Rosner clocked a career-best 54.08 in the 400 hurdles for 12th place. He also placed 10th in the long jump in 22-0 1-2, and had a personal-best javelin throw of 160-10.

Nate Raddatz placed second in the javelin in 174-11 -- just two inches off his career best.

Three others Tommie men competed in the long jump -- Isaiah Hopf leaped 21-10 1-2; Raddatz jumped 21-8 3-4; and Gary Afram recorded a best of 21-5.

Sam Duffing took 14th place in the 400 hurdles in a career-best 55.03.


Friday Women's Highlights

Two Tommie women recorded D-I era team bests:
  • Sophomore Molly Desotell took fourth place out of 25 runners in the 1,500 meters in a personal-best time of 4:38.51.
  • Grad student Anna Swanson took second place out of 25 throwers in her section of the javelin in 139-9.
