James with two goals to help Tommies secure first conference win of the season on Senior Day

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Thomas Men's Soccer team put up a tough fight against Western Illinois on Saturday afternoon, posting a 3-1 score at South Field.

Keegan James scored two goals in the first 10 minutes of the game to put the Purple up 2-0. A third goal shortly after by Faris Colic extended the Tommies lead 3-0 going into half time.

RECAP
The Tommies and the Leathernecks kicked off the afternoon with an intense first half. The Purple scored all three goals in the first 15 minutes of the match.

It began in the fifth minute, when Isaac Eckroth put a shot on goal that was saved by the Leathernecks goalie, Carson Jeffery. Four seconds later, Keegan James sent the ball into the net the Tommies first goal of the afternoon. In the eighth minute, it was James again with the goal, assisted by Kevin Sliva.

In the 13th minute, Faris Colic extended the Tommies lead with the third of the game, unassisted. That goal made it his third of the season, tying the single season record of goals scored in the DI-era.

The rest of the half went on with two shots for Western Illinois, both saved by goalkeeper Tucker Mann.

The second half started off quieter than the first. Aden Hansen had a shot, out right in the 56th minute. Shortly following that, Western Illinois scored their lone goal of the game. Both teams added one additional shot on goal for the remainder of the match. The Tommies ultimately won their final game of the season, 3-1.

Men's soccer tied their record of goals scored in a game in the DI-era. The last three goal game was Sept. 4, 2022 against Incarnate Word.

QUOTABLES
Thoughts from Head Coach Jon Lowry after Saturday's Match:

"Really pleased with how we started. I think last weekend at Kansas City was a bitter taste in our mouth, and you could see how quickly we got to work against Western Illinois. A great effort from top to bottom from a lot of guys that were running pretty thin on how much energy they had left, but we got through it and again, I'm really happy for the guys."

TOMMIE SENIOR QUICK FACTS
  • Isaac Eckroth set the record in minutes played in the DI-era (3874.11 minutes played)
  • Tucker Mann finished his Tommie career playing in 27 games. He posted a 5-16-4 record, including a 2-2-1 record this season.
  • Wes Lorrens totaled his most minutes played in a season with 1318 minutes, starting in all 16 games.
