Gustafson’s double-double not enough during 3-0 loss

Freshman outside hitter recorded fourth double-double of 2023

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Freshman Ellie Gustafson gathered her fourth double-double of the season on Thursday night as St. Thomas volleyball fell to South Dakota in three sets (22-25, 17-25, 15-25). 

Senior Ellie Dammann and freshman Emily Clausen both lead the team with three total blocks each while freshman setter Morgan Kealy paced the squad with 13 assists.

Recap
The Yotes started the match with a 5-1 lead over the Tommies.  Sophomore Allie Kopp was able to go on a run of serves bringing St. Thomas back into the lead, 6-5.  The Tommies were able to grow the lead to 13-10 with a couple attacking errors by the South Dakota offense.  The rest of the set went back-and-forth but the Tommies were not able to secure the last couple points of the set.

The second set started like the first with South Dakota taking an early 4-1 lead.  Junior Ava Wild was able to bring St. Thomas back to a tied game at 4-4 with three consecutive points including two kills from the left and right side of the net and a block.  The Yotes pulled away from the with a 24-14 lead and closed the set followed three Tommie kills.

St. Thomas was able to keep the Yotes close early in the third set.  Two back-to-back aces from libero Ella Voegele brought the Tommies to a 3-1 lead.  St. Thomas went back-and-forth with South Dakota up until the Coyotes went on an eight-point run and took the final set of the match.

Top Tommies
  • Freshman Ellie Gustafson lead the team in kills with 11 and secured her fourth double-double of the season with 12 digs.
  • Junior Ava Wild had four kills on eight attempts and finished with a .375 hitting percentage.
  • Freshman Ella Voegele once again led the team in digs with 15 total on the night.
Up Next
The Tommies will play their final home match of the season against the Omaha Mavericks on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 12 p.m.  Before the match, the team will be celebrating Senior Day/Parents Day with a ceremony on the court.
