Michigan Tech gets go-ahead, empty-net scores to top Men's Hockey

1/13/2023 8:47:00 PM | Men's Hockey

Houghton, Mich. - No. 13-ranked Michigan Tech scored the game's first goal with 11:11 left in regulation time and added an empty-net score to post a 2-0 victory over St. Thomas in Friday night's CCHA men's hockey game.

Freshman Aaron Trotter stopped 36 of 37 shots in net for the Tommies (5-15-1 overall, 4-10-1 CCHA), who were playing their first league game in four weeks.

Blake Pietila recorded his fifth shutout of the season for Tech (15-6-3, 8-6-3) as he finished with 27 saves. The Huskies remain squarely in the league title race with nine games to go as they climbed to 6-1-3 on home ice.

St. Thomas is 0-3 on the season against Tech, although the Toms were tied in period three of each of the three defeats. They previously lost to Tech 6-2 and 4-3 in a home series in November.

Tech converted a breakaway chance in a 4-on-4 setting to take a 1-0 lead.
