Sioux Falls, S.D. - Tommie Baseball freshman outfield Brigs Richartz on Monday was named Summit League Player of the Week. It was his first such honor in his young college baseball career.
The Menomonie, Wis., native went 9-for-13 with six RBI to lead the Purple's three-game home sweep of Omaha, May 19-21.
In a 6-4 comeback victory on Thursday, Richartz' three-run home run in the eighth inning capped a 4-of-4 day. His single drove in the tie-breaking run on Friday in the eighth inning for a 3-2 lead in a 5-2 victory, capping his 3-for-4 day. On Saturday in Miesville, Minn., Richartz went 2-for-5 and his RBI double helped in a seven-run fifth-inning uprising that erased a 7-1 deficit in an eventual 9-8 win.
Richartz was one of two Tommies to start all 45 games for the Tommies. He led or shared the team lead in hits (44), RBI (28) and doubles (seven). He had only one error in 45 chances in the outfield and also threw out one runner trying to advance. He hit safely in 16 out of 17 games during a midseason stretch, and had 10 multi-hit and seven-multi-RBI games.
His play helped the Purple take fifth place out of seven teams in the Summit League in the program's inaugural season in Division I athletics. St. Thomas went 11-8 over its final five weeks of the season after a 5-21 start. The 16-29 final record included 16 losses by one or two runs.
This is St. Thomas' fourth weekly Summit player honor received for the 2022 season, as Richartz joins past honorees Graham Laubscher and Kolby Gartner (Pitcher of the Week), and Sam Kulesa as Player of the Week.
Southern Cal and St. Thomas were the lone teams to sweep a three-game set with Omaha this season. The Mavs, who went 5-5 against Big Ten Conference teams, are set to play in this week's four-team Summit League playoffs.
