Sioux Falls, S.D. - Tommie Baseball redshirt sophomore Sam Kulesa on Monday was named Summit League Ticket Smarter Baseball Player of the Week. It's his first career Athlete of the Week honor in his two seasons as a starter in college baseball.
Kulesa went 6-for-11 at the plate and ran his hitting streak to six games in helping the Toms take two of three from Western Illinois over the weekend.
Overall he batted .500 (7-for-14) with four RBI in a 2-2 week for the Tommies. The Minneapolis native had an RBI single in the 4-1 win over WIU on Friday, and came back to go 3-for-5 with three RBI in Sunday's 12-2 victory. He beat out an infield hit in his final at-bat to help two runs score and end the game via a 10-run rule.
Kulesa also played error-free defense on 13 chances on last week and helped turn four double plays. He hasn't had an error over his last 22 games (80 chances). As a redshirt freshman last season, Kulesa received the lone D-III Rawlings Gold Glove Award for second basemen as he recorded only error in 187 defensive chances over 47 games.
In 77 career games, Kulesa has 95 hits. Sunday's three-hit game was his 29th collegiate multi-hit outing.
After posting a 5-21 record to start 2022 -- with 15 losses by one or two runs -- St. Thomas is 7-3 in its last 10 games. The Toms have recorded a 2-1 series win in consecutive weekends at Tarleton State and at home vs. Northern Colorado and Western Illinois. The Purple sit in fifth plate in the seven-team Summit League standings with nine games to go.
