Sioux Falls, S.D. - Tommie Baseball sophomore Kolby Gartner on Monday was named Summit League Ticket Smarter Pitcher of the Week.
It's Gartner's first such career award and the second conference Pitcher of the Week honor claimed by the St. Thomas staff in 2022. Graham Laubscher received the same award two weeks earlier after a shutout victory over first-place North Dakota State.
Gartner recorded his first Division I win with his team's first complete game pitching outing of 2022 as he shut out Minnesota 6-0 last Tuesday on the road in Minneapolis. The righthander from St. Michael-Albertville High allowed three hits and three walks and struck out nine. After allowing a leadoff single in the first inning, Gartner set down 18 of the next 21 batters. No Minnesota baserunner advanced past second base.
This was the Tommies' first complete-game by a pitcher in its debut one competing in Division I. Gartner lowered his ERA to 4.03 and has 29 strikeouts in 29 innings.
It also marked the first time the Gophers were shutout this season, and just the second time Minnesota was shut out on campus in seven seasons. The Gophers has beaten the Tommies in 20 of the previous 22 meetings, including 12-0 and 2-1 wins earlier in 2022 making the outcome that much sweeter.
The victory was St. Thomas' first over a Power 5 conference team this school year in 28 meetings in the sports of hockey, volleyball, basketball, softball and baseball.
Tommie pitchers continue to rank among the top D-I teams in strikeouts per nine innings (10.5, top 20) and ERA (4.26, top 50).
After a slow start with a rash of one- and two-run losses, the Purple (10-22) have posted victories in five of their last six games, including winning weekend series by 2-1 margins in back-to-back weekends with Tarleton State and Northern Colorado. They are scheduled to play four games this week: Wednesday night at Minnesota in non-conference play; and a Summit League home series April 29 and 30 and May 1 vs. Western Illinois.
