Salt Lake City, Utah -- Utah outlasted St. Thomas Men's Basketball during a 95-66 win Saturday night as Will Engels led the Tommies with 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting.
Engels scored nine of his team-high 16 points in the second half while Ben Nau added 10 second-half points on 3-of-5 shooting off the bench. The Tommies (5-3) shot 41.1 percent from the field (23-56), including 54.2 percent in the second half (13-24), and 34.8 percent from beyond the arc (8-23).
Five Utes scored in double-figures while shooting 59 percent from the field (36-61) and 63 percent from 3-point range (10-16) as a team. Utah scored 21 points off 13 St. Thomas turnovers and won the battle in the paint, 44-28.
Utah jumped out to a 6-2 lead early before Andrew Rohde scored five straight points for St. Thomas to cut the deficit to one, 8-7. The Purple went on a nearly five-minute scoreless streak before Rohde hit a 3-pointer to trail, 18-9.
After another double-digit lead by the Utes, Engels hit a second-chance layup to start a quick 8-0 run for the Tommies to trail by single-digits, 30-22. St. Thomas and Utah traded scores before a last-second alley-oop gave the Utes a 36-24 lead at the half.
An 8-2 run by Utah out of the halftime break gave the home team a 46-28 lead. Despite the Tommies shooting over 50 percent in the second half, the Utes hit 63.6 percent from the field and 77.8 percent from 3-point range over the final 20 minutes to pull away.
St. Thomas returns to Schoenecker Arena Tuesday, Nov. 29 with a 7 p.m. tip-off against North Central.
