Abel named Pioneer Football League Offensive Player of the Week

St. Paul, Minn. - In his first collegiate start, freshman RB Gabe Abel earned Pioneer Football League Offensive Player of the Week after a 100-yard, three touchdown effort against Drake.
Abel became the fourth FCS freshman to rush for three touchdowns this season in St. Thomas' 26-17 PFL victory against Drake, Saturday. In his first collegiate start, he had 18 carries for 100 yards with 61 yards and a touchdown on four carries in the fourth quarter.
With the game tied 7-7 in the second quarter, Abel's six-yard touchdown run broke the tie with 8:28 remaining in the half. He added a second touchdown run six minutes later, giving St. Thomas a 20-7 halftime lead.
Abel wrapped up the day's scoring with a five-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, set up by a 33-yard rush on the previous play.
Abel becomes the third PFL player to record three touchdown carries in a game this season.
The Tommies look to remain atop PFL standings on Saturday when they take on Presbyterian on the road.
