Seniors Olivia Moll and Sara Miller posted top-four individual finishes and freshman Molly Desotell had a strong collegiate debut to lead St. Thomas Women's Cross Country to second place out of five teams at Friday evening's Bethel Twilight race at Blaine's Victory Links golf course.
Minnesota-Duluth scored 25 points to edge St. Thomas (39). It was the first race of the season for the Purple, who are beginning their inaugural season as a Division I program.
Just five seconds separated the top four finishers in a field of 99 runners for the three-mile race -- UMD senior D-II All-American Mackenzie Hall (17:12.7); Moll (17:14.5); UMD's Morgan Radel (17:16.3); and Miller (17:17.2) took the top four spots. Desotell closed in sixth place in 17:36.
Coach Joe Sweeney had six other runners place in the top 26: Soph Morgan Ede was 14th (18:25); senior Caroline Johnson took 16th (18:27); senior Gabbie Bolcer placed 18th (18:41); freshman Ava Pankratz placed 19th (18:45); freshman Lauren Ellefson took 23rd (18:54); and senior Quinn O'Connor placed 26th (19:03).
