Redshirt sophomore Morey Smith won individual honors with a photo finish and Tommie Men's Cross Country had eight of the first 16 finishers en route to a team victory Friday evening at the Bethel Twilight race at Blaine's Victory Links golf course.
The Toms scored 21 points to top Division II Minnesota-Duluth (60) and five other teams.
It was the first race of the season for Coach Pete Wareham's team in its inaugural season as a Division I program. It also came 93 weeks since the last St. Thomas CC race, at the D-III nationals in November 2019.
Smith clocked 20:20.2 for the four-mile race but had to grind to the tape to hold off Calvin Boone of St. Scholastica by just .20 of a second. Tommie redshirt sophomores Colton Halla (20:20.4) and Zach Haire (20:22.8) and redshirt freshman Charles Caven (20:30) placed 3-4-5.
Seven other Toms had top-30 places in a field of 82 finishers: redshirt junior Keegan Sansone (20:46) placed eighth; freshman Tony Weeks took 11th (21:02); redshirt freshman Harris Anderson (21:09) placed 14th; redshirt sophomore Adam McCollor (21:14) placed 16th; redshirt freshman Mickies Kiros (21:38) was 27th; redshirt junior Mac Karrick placed 28th (21:39); and redshirt sophomore Sam Theisen was 29th (21:50).
The Toms held out a few athletes from Friday's race. St. Thomas will compete Sept. 24 in the University of Minnesita's Roy Griak Invite.
