Redshirt sophomore Zach Haire placed 65th in a field of 224 runners in a time of 25:50 to lead Tommie Men's Cross Country to a solid 14th place finish out of 21 Division I teams at Friday's Roy Griak Invite hosted by the University of Minnesota.

The 8,000-meter event over rolling hills at the U of M golf course in Falcon Heights on a cloudy, breezy morning was St. Thomas' first race as a Division I program competing in D-I.

Coach Pete Wareham's team placed second among five Summit League teams in the competition, which included conference favorite South Dakota State (9th, 242); St. Thomas (14th, 387), South Dakota (16th, 474), North Dakota (20th, 519) and North Dakota State (21st, 646).

The Purple were picked fifth out of eight teams in the Summit preseason coaches' poll, behind South Dakota State, North Dakota State, South Dakota and North Dakota.

After Haire, the Toms put their Nos. 2-3-4-5-6 finishers in a 22-second pack led by redshirt sophomores Colton Halla (87th, 26:06) and Morey Smith (95th, 26:16). Close behind were redshirt freshmen Charles Caven (103rd, 26:23) and Harris Anderson (107th, 26:26) and true freshman Tony Weeks (111th, 26:28).

Rounding out the top 10 Tommie finishers were redshirt juniors Keegan Sansone (137th, 26:48), Biel Wiel (144th, 26:52) and Mac Karrick (152nd, 26:58), and sophomore Adam McCollor (179th, 27:23).

No. 3-ranked BYU edged No. 10-ranked Iowa State, 34-35, for first place. No. 26-ranked Michigan State placed third, followed by Minnesota, Wyoming and Santa Clara in the Nos. 4-6 spots.

The Tommies are scheduled to race again next Friday Oct. 1 at the Notre Dame Invite. The host Irish are ranked No. 2 in Division I.
