Tight matches, but Women's Tennis falls in Sweet 16

5/16/2021 8:27:00 PM | Women's Tennis

St. Thomas Women's Tennis saw its 2021 season end one step shy of the national quarterfinals with Sunday's 5-1 loss to unbeaten Kenyon in NCAA Regional playoff action in Whitewater, Wis.

The Tommies (14-4) had their 14-match win streak end and took their first loss to a Division III opponent this season. They closed out the team portion of their season tied for ninth place nationally.

Coach Ken Cychosz' Purple held close leads in all three doubles matches, but the Ohio school rallied to win at first and second doubles by margins of 8-4 and 8-7. Clare Palen and Monterey Knewtson won 8-5 at third doubles for the Toms.

Kenyon, which used three seniors and two juniors in today's lineup, closed out the victory with wins at Nos. 1-4-5 singles. UST trailed in one match but two other singles matches were close when the winners secured the fifth point.

Kenyon improved to 10-0 on the season and is 56-8 over the last four seasons.

St. Thomas freshmen Nicole Snezhko and Jannah ElNemr will go on to play in the individual portion of the NCAA Championships, May 28 in Chattanooga, Tenn.
