Women's Soccer caps unbeaten spring season

5/1/2021 4:12:00 PM | Women's Soccer

Tommie Women's Soccer closed out its NCAA Division III and MIAC eras in style on Saturday at South Field with a 1-0 home victory over Bethel.

The Tommies (5-0) outscored five league opponents by a 16-0 margin. They went 17-0-5 in their last 22 D-III contests and pushed their home-field unbeaten streak to 29 games (25-0-4).

After several near misses on offense in the first half, St. Thomas' Megan Zickert converted a goal in the 52nd minute, assisted by fellow senior Kate Heimer, for the game's only score.

Tommie senior Sarah Pasternak was in net, and made a diving save late in the first half. Saturday's game made it 20 solo or combined shutouts that Pasternak, a co-starter, was a part of over her last three seasons.

St. Thomas had a 14-1 advantage in shots on goal and a 7-0 edge in corner kicks on an 82-degree day on the warm turf.

Heimer, Zickert, Pasternak, Ellie Eskierka, Tessa Trettel and Paige Cater are all graduating seniors for Coach Sheila McGill.

A seventh senior, defender Gaba Palazzo, will return in fall 2021 and play on the Toms' inaugural Division I team in the Summit League.

St. Thomas allowed only three goals in their last 15 games in Division III, and had shutouts in 41 of 62 games over the last four seasons.
