Baseball keeps MIAC lead with split at Bethel

Kyle Halverson's bases-loaded triple broke a 0-0 tie in the sixth inning and Duke Coborn recorded his second complete-game pitching win in nine days to lead Tommie Baseball to a 4-1 victory at Bethel in game one of Wednesday's MIAC doubleheader in Arden Hills.
In game two, James Woelfel slapped a three-run homer to extend the lead to 6-0 and the Royals (14-7 overall, 7-3 MIAC) went on to claim a 7-1 victory to forge a split. The Toms left 11 on base and grounded into a double play in the game-two loss.
St. Thomas (14-4, 9-1) had an 11-game win streak halted in the nightcap. The Toms are 2-4 in Wednesday and Thursday games and 12-0 in all others.
The Tommies, Gustavus (6-1) and Bethel (7-3) hold the MIAC's top three spots coming up on the halfway point of the 11-team conference race.
The seven-inning opener was scoreless into the top of the sixth until Jake Porter and Owen Best punched two-out singles. A walk to Avery Lehman loaded the bases, and Halverson stroked a triple to right center for a 3-0 lead. The Toms added one insurance run in the seventh. Coborn lost his shutout in the final at bat on a pair of two-out singles sandwiched around a wild pitch and a balk. Coborn fanned five and scattered six hits.
Sam Kulesa and Charlie Bartholomew each had four hits to combine for half of the Purple's 16 hits on the day.
St. Thomas is off next weekend as the St. Olaf series has been canceled due to Covid protocols. The Toms are scheduled to play two at Gustavus on April 21.
