Volleyball drops 3-1 decision to Bethel in spring opener

After a near 72-week layoff from playing outside competition that counts in the scorebook, St. Thomas Volleyball took to its home court Wednesday night to face Bethel in the opening contest of a seven-match spring 2021 schedule.
The Royals hit .269 and spoiled the Tommies' return with a 3-1 win at Schoenecker Arena. Kirstin Cotter had 18 kills and Ellie Hoyt had four aces for BU.
Coach Thanh Pham's Tommies hit just .108 and showed some of the rust that was expected in a Covid year. The pandemic prompted spring 2020 workouts to be called off and the fall 2020 season to be postponed, although a condensed spring season that was approved will help MIAC teams regain some momentum.
Sophomore Selena Levendoski recorded 10 kills and hit .444 and senior DS Meghan Mazzola had 16 digs to lead the Tommies.
Pham was able to use 16 different players in the match, a sign of things to come in six upcoming April matches. The coach will look to assess the talent on his roster over the coming five weeks as St. Thomas prepares to transition its program into Division I and the Summit League starting this fall.
The Toms are scheduled to face Augsburg next Wednesday night.
