Women's Hockey blanked by No. 8-ranked Bulldogs, 3-0

Freshman goalie Saskia Maurer continued her strong play in net with 32 saves, but No.-8-ranked Minnesota-Duluth scored a 3-0 win over the host Tommies in Saturday afternoon's WCHA women's hockey contest in Mendota Heights.
Emma Soderberg stopped all 21 shots she faced for the Bulldogs (3-4 overall, 3-4 WCHA). Three different players scored mid-game goals for UMD, which was playing St. Thomas for the first time in 23 seasons.
Maurer stopped a third-period penalty shot for St. Thomas (2-4-1, 2-4-1), which had a three-game unbeaten streak halted.
Acting St. Thomas head coach Bethany Brausen credited Minnesota-Duluth's play and pressure, but she saw a lot of positives from the Tommies. Brausen and assistant Marty Sertich are helping direct the team this weekend with head coach Joel Johnson leading a trip with the U.S. Women's National Team this week.
"I thought it was a great game," Brausen said. "Our girls played hard. We went back and reviewed all the goals between periods, and the first one went off a skate, the next one with off a stick. Overall we are pretty pleased. We would liked to have generated more offense. They have one of the top lines in the country, no doubt about it. I thought our girls responded well and did everything we could. We played a fast game and we played hard. Our girls were disappointed, but there were really good pieces to that game."
The teams close out the weekend series with a 2 p.m. game her Sunday.
